U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on May 21 that positive signals are emerging in discussions between the United States and Iran, though he cautioned against premature optimism.
“There are some positive signals, but at the same time we understand the situation and do not want to be overly optimistic,” Rubio said. “Let’s see what happens in the next few days.”
Rubio confirmed that Washington remains engaged in efforts to reach an agreement with Tehran, including dispatching Pakistani representatives to Iran as part of diplomatic initiatives. He also stated that President Donald Trump continues to prioritize a diplomatic resolution with Iran.
However, Rubio noted that if negotiations fail to produce results, the United States has alternative paths forward.
The Secretary of State’s comments follow recent remarks by President Trump on May 18, who asserted that Washington is unwilling to make concessions during talks with Tehran. Trump claimed that Iran seeks “a deal more than ever” because it perceives U.S. actions could cause “even more pain.” He further stated that sanctions on Iran would not be lifted until an agreement is signed by Tehran.
The White House has stated that negotiations between the United States and Iran are at the “final stage,” though President Trump indicated he remains “in no hurry” to complete them.
