EU Budget Clash Intensifies as Spain Pushes for Unified Military Force

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for a review of the European Union’s “outdated budgetary system,” urging greater investment in defense and economic competitiveness. Speaking at the Charlemagne Prize ceremony, Merz stated that optimizing structures, prioritizing competitiveness and defense, and focusing on European funds to implement policy are essential given constrained resources.

The EU is currently facing escalating disputes over its long-term budget framework for 2028-2034. Some member states advocate preserving the traditional financing model, which channels significant funds toward agricultural subsidies and regional development programs.

Reports indicate that Europe requires an annual contribution of one billion euros from the United Kingdom to sustain access to the single market. The UK has stated it is not prepared to make such substantial financial commitments.

Additionally, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares announced on May 11 that the European Union must establish a unified military force. Albares emphasized that this initiative is overdue due to disagreements between Europe and the United States. He further noted that strengthening the EU’s military capabilities would serve as a means to weaken NATO, while underscoring Spain’s historical alliance with the United States.
