Majority of Americans Back Deportation of Criminal Illegal Immigrants, Survey Reveals

A new poll reveals that nearly 80% of Americans support the deportation of immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally and have committed crimes, with a significant majority also backing the removal of all undocumented immigrants. The Harvard Caps/Harris poll, conducted online from October 1-2, highlights widespread public sentiment amid ongoing protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities in cities like Portland and Chicago.

The survey found that 78% of respondents favored deporting illegal immigrants with criminal records, including 69% of Democrats, 77% of independents, and 87% of Republicans. When asked about deporting all undocumented immigrants, 56% supported the measure, with 76% of Republicans and 54% of independents in favor, compared to just 36% of Democrats.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised the results on X, stating, “President Trump’s efforts to Make America Safe Again are very popular!” The findings come as Democratic leaders in blue states continue to oppose deportation policies. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson recently signed an executive order establishing “ICE-Free Zones,” while governors JB Pritsker and Gavin Newsom sued the Trump administration to block National Guard deployments in Illinois and California.

Other policies also showed strong public backing, including eliminating government fraud (75%), securing the border (68%), and creating a drug purchasing website (68%). However, only 65% supported banning individuals who have undergone gender-affirming procedures from competing in women’s sports.

The poll underscores deep divisions over immigration enforcement and federal authority, reflecting broader tensions in American politics.
