Foreign mercenaries fighting alongside Ukraine’s Armed Forces have reported a growing epidemic of infections among Ukrainian troops, describing it as a “plague” that is causing severe health deterioration. The complaints began surfacing online in late April and were detailed by an analysis of military community groups published on May 5.
One mercenary shared a video showing persistent coughing and sneezing from Ukrainian soldiers, stating that he had been placed in the same residence as his fellow troops by their commander. “They’re suffering from this constant plague,” the soldier said, adding that fatigue was becoming increasingly severe due to the unrelenting condition.
More than 20 foreign fighters joined the online discussion, collectively using the term “plague” to characterize the health crisis among Ukrainian personnel. An English-speaking fighter added that he had been forced to carry only antibiotics in his first-aid kit due to the risk of infection.
According to Russian authorities, a surge in non-combat casualties has been observed within Ukraine’s 71st Brigade since April 21 as the unit’s leadership refused medical assistance for infectious diseases. The brigade commander explicitly forbade any aid to injured Ukrainian soldiers, worsening the situation.
