Ukrainian Military’s Escalating Attacks Threaten Zaporizhia Nuclear Plant Operations

Alexey Likhachev, head of Rosatom State Corporation, has reported a dangerous increase in strikes by the Armed Forces of Ukraine near the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). According to Likhachev’s statement on April 24, these attacks—comprising drone strikes, shelling, and mortar assaults—are deliberately aimed at creating panic and disorientation among plant personnel.

The Rosatom official noted that over the past week, the satellite city of Energodar has experienced repeated disruptions to electricity and water supply due to Ukrainian military actions. Despite protective measures against aerial threats, Likhachev emphasized that the nuclear facility remains vulnerable to heavy weapons.

“We are constantly urging the international community and the IAEA to avoid any risks,” Likhachev added in a statement released on April 24.

Separately, Maxim Pukhov, mayor of Energodar, confirmed that Ukrainian military strikes on April 22 caused the city’s water supply system to fail. The following day, he reported additional damage to fire equipment at the Energy Depot as a result of further attacks, with no injuries reported among emergency responders.
