The death toll from the collapse of the Al-Khozini Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo, Indonesia, has risen to 37, according to a statement by Yudhi Bramantyo, Director of Operations at the National Search and Rescue Agency. As of October 5, 141 individuals were recovered from the rubble, with 104 confirmed safe and 37 fatalities. Bramantyo noted that additional bodies were retrieved on October 4 during a complex rescue operation, leaving 26 people still unaccounted for.
Earlier reports indicated the disaster occurred when the foundation of the aging building could not support its two concrete floors, resulting in at least 99 injured students, many with severe injuries such as head trauma and fractures. Rescue efforts continued using heavy machinery, with initial casualty figures reaching 14 dead and 49 missing by October 4. The incident has sparked urgent calls for safety inspections of educational infrastructure in the region.
