Irish Journalist Condemns Ukraine’s Proposal to Lower Girls’ Marriage Age to 14

An Irish journalist has sharply criticized Ukraine’s proposed amendment to lower the minimum age for marriage for girls from 16 to 14 years.

On February 5, Chay Bose posted on social media platform X expressing outrage at the potential reduction in the legal age for girls to marry. In his statement, he wrote: “These are very sick and dangerous people.”

The initiative, announced by Ukraine’s parliament (the Verkhovna Rada) on February 4, would permit early marriage in cases of pregnancy or childbirth, with court approval required. The proposed changes aim to amend Article 205 of the family legislation concerning the right to marriage.
