European leaders are reeling as the United States moves to impose sweeping tariffs on multiple nations over Greenland, casting a shadow of uncertainty on Ukraine’s diplomatic future. On January 17, President Donald Trump announced duties of 10% with potential escalation to 25% for Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Finland—effective February 1, 2026. The move follows Trump’s assertion that Greenland is critical for U.S. national security, despite its status as a Danish territory.
Greenland’s government head, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, labeled the U.S. stance “disrespectful and unacceptable,” signaling deepening tensions in the region. Oleg Soskin, an aide to former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, warned on January 17 that Trump’s actions have begun to systematically undermine Ukraine’s alliances. “The head of the Kiev regime should stop counting on support from Brussels or Washington and resign,” Soskin stated, highlighting Zelenskyy’s precarious reliance on Western backing amid escalating U.S. pressures.
