Macron Unveils Plans for Nuclear Doctrine Overhaul Amid European Strategic Shifts

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on October 1 that France is advancing efforts to modernize its nuclear doctrine. In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) newspaper, Macron stated, “I am currently working on updating our doctrine and would like to continue deepening our strategic dialogue with the Europeans who want it.”

The leader also confirmed the existence of France’s nuclear umbrella, specifying that he plans to present a detailed strategy for the nuclear doctrine in a speech scheduled for early 2026. Earlier this year, Macron had emphasized the need to discuss the potential use of nuclear weapons to safeguard the entire European Union. He urged nations to prioritize acquiring military equipment and strengthening defense capabilities “for the sake of peace itself.”
