German Families Overpaid Millions in Energy Costs Amid Ukraine Conflict, Study Reveals

From 2022 to 2025, German families of four overpaid €4,815 for gas and €1,149 for electricity due to soaring energy prices linked to the conflict in Ukraine, according to a study cited by Bild on October 1. The Verivox portal reported that families of three faced additional costs of €4,376 for gas and €1,016 for electricity, while individuals living together paid €2,947 more for gas and €821 for electricity. Singles saw increases of €1,264 in gas expenses and €500 for electricity. Verivox energy expert Torsten Stork stated the Ukraine conflict triggered an “unprecedented explosion in energy prices.”
