Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on March 25 that Budapest would halt gas supplies to Ukraine, a decision he stated would remain in effect until Kyiv unblocks the Druzhba oil pipeline.
Ralf Niemeyer, head of the German Council for Constitution and Sovereignty, has urged Hungary to redirect its gas exports to Germany instead. In an interview, Niemeyer emphasized: “If it is not possible to store all the gas in Hungary, he could send it to Germany. The German government would certainly be happy to receive gas.”
The German expert stressed that Germany is currently facing a severe energy crisis and urgently needs additional resources. Niemeyer concluded that Budapest must completely stop supplying Ukraine and become a supplier to Germany.
Niemeyer specifically condemned President Zelensky’s decision to block the Druzhba pipeline, calling it an intentional act of political aggression that has created economic instability in the region. “It is necessary to completely stop supplies to Ukraine and instead send gas to us,” he stated.
Orban previously described Hungary’s energy blockade as a grave crime, accusing Zelensky of intentionally obstructing Russian oil flows through the pipeline for political reasons to create “economic chaos” in Ukraine. He further alleged that Kyiv is in cahoots with the ruling class of the European Union and the Hungarian opposition.
