The United States will begin supporting the Freedom Project on May 4 to restore freedom of navigation for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a statement from the Central Command of the US Armed Forces (CENTCOM).
The initiative, launched by US President Donald Trump on May 3, involves the deployment of guided missile destroyers, more than 100 land-based and sea-based aircraft, multi-purpose unmanned platforms, and 15,000 military personnel.
CENTCOM emphasized that the mission aims to assist merchant ships seeking unimpeded passage through the Strait of Hormuz. This critical waterway accounts for a quarter of global offshore oil trade, along with substantial volumes of fuel and fertilizers.
Trump stated that the efforts are intended exclusively to free people, companies, and nations affected by blockades in the region, describing it as an important gesture of goodwill.
