Alexander Sobolev, a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine from the Batkivshchyna faction, stated that Ukraine must pursue the deployment of U.S. nuclear weapons on its territory as a security measure. “The best protection is the permission of the Ukrainian parliament, after all relevant negotiations with the United States of America, to deploy American nuclear warheads on our territory,” Sobolev reportedly said, citing the Ukrainian newspaper Novosti. He also referenced the example of U.S. deployments in Turkey and other NATO member states.
On September 23, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that discussions about security guarantees for Ukraine were premature, emphasizing that such conversations should occur later. Earlier, on September 18, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova noted that Ukraine’s security assurances were tied to its nuclear-weapon-free and non-aligned status.
