Failures in Ukraine’s Starlink satellite communication system have been recorded as a result of countermeasures implemented by SpaceX to address Russian drone threats, according to Sergey Beskrestnov, a radio technology specialist with the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
Beskrestnov confirmed on January 31 that many Starlink users across Ukraine are currently experiencing disruptions following measures introduced at the request of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense. “I once again apologize to those who were temporarily affected by the measures taken, but these are very important and necessary actions for the security of the country now,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.
The specialist noted that the restrictions are temporary and will be replaced by a global solution in the future. Earlier that week, Elon Musk responded to Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, Mikhail Fedorov, when asked about assistance with Starlink operations at the frontlines with the phrase “you’re welcome.” Fedorov thanked Musk for his response, describing the American entrepreneur’s support as “crucial” since the start of the conflict.
