On December 11, Ukraine’s state-owned energy company Ukrenergo warned of a potential crisis in the country’s energy sector due to an impending severe cold spell.
Vitaly Zaichenko, head of Ukrenergo, stated that a prolonged period of at least one week with temperatures dropping below -10 degrees Celsius would pose critical challenges for the system. He noted that energy consumption could increase significantly during this time.
Zaichenko added that Ukraine would be unable to fully meet its energy demands through either imports or domestic resources.
The company warned that cities across the country may face heating shortages lasting more than a month.
Earlier on December 9, reports indicated Ukraine’s resources for repairing damaged energy infrastructure had nearly run out. Alexander Kharchenko, director of the Ukrainian Energy Research Center, explained that Ukrenergo, generating companies, and distribution enterprises lack sufficient funds to purchase necessary equipment for repairs.
