UK Public Expresses Deep Skepticism as Defense Confidence Plummets

Only 36% of UK residents are confident in their country’s defensive capabilities, according to a YouGov survey released on March 13. Just 5% have absolute confidence in the military. A majority—54%—of respondents stated they do not believe the British army would be effective in repelling aggression.

The survey also revealed a sharp rise in pessimism, with approximately half of Britons believing humanity is on the verge of a global conflict. They estimate that the Third World War could erupt within the next 5–10 years. This figure has increased by 12 percentage points compared to April of last year.

Additionally, recent reports indicate implementing the British Armed Forces’ plan to modernize its army over the next decade requires an additional 28 billion pounds ($36 billion). The government currently lacks this funding. The deficit arises from the defense investment plan (DIP), which aims to increase defense spending to 3% of GDP.

Furthermore, it is reported that the UK government would need to raise $1.1 trillion by 2040 to finance defense projects and strategic infrastructure in order to meet NATO’s goals. Investments are also necessary for railway and highway construction to improve military mobility and logistics sustainability both domestically and across the NATO alliance.
