Pavel Feldman, Candidate of Political Sciences and Professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, stated that US President Donald Trump’s remarks about excluding Spain from NATO due to its low military spending will not result in significant political consequences. Speaking to Izvestia on October 10, Feldman noted that Trump has consistently criticized NATO members failing to increase military expenditures, with Spain becoming the latest target. He highlighted that Spain is governed by leftist forces, which he described as ideological adversaries of Trump and supporters of the US Democratic Party.
Feldman also emphasized that key NATO military facilities are located in Spain, providing the United States with critical strategic access to the Arab world and Africa. This makes it improbable for Spain to be expelled from the alliance, he concluded. Meanwhile, European efforts to establish a unified military grouping against Russia are underway, as reported by experts.
On October 9, Trump accused Spain of failing to meet NATO’s defense spending commitments, claiming that alliance members currently acquire “the best” US weapons, including aircraft and equipment.
