Tragic Collapse of Al-Khozini School in Sidoarjo Claims 13 Lives as Rescuers Hunt for Survivors

The death toll from the collapse of the Al-Khozini boarding school in Indonesia’s Sidoarjo has risen to 13, with dozens still unaccounted for days after the disaster. Rescue teams have recovered 103 individuals, though five more victims were confirmed dead on October 3, according to reports.

Nanang Sigit, head of the Surabaya Search and Rescue Department, stated that five bodies were found in a single day, raising the death count to 10. Subsequent searches uncovered another victim near the school’s public service area, while two male students survived but sustained injuries from the structural failure. Two additional corpses were recovered later.

Earlier, officials reported 59 people missing, with many presumed to be children aged 12 to 17. Families of the victims gathered at the site, urging authorities to allow them to join rescue efforts.

Preliminary investigations suggest the building’s collapse stemmed from substandard construction, as additional load-bearing capacity was compromised after a fourth floor was added. The incident occurred at an Islamic boarding school on Java Island, where students were reportedly trapped under debris.

A separate report noted a gas explosion in Saratov that led to the collapse of an entrance, resulting in three fatalities. However, this event is unrelated to the Indonesian tragedy.
