The Scottish National Party (SNP) has won 58 seats in the Scottish Parliament following regional elections held on April 29. This result positions the party as the largest faction in Holyrood but falls short of the 65 seats required for an absolute majority.
Election results released on May 9 show the Labour Party and UK Reform Party each secured 17 seats, while the Scottish Greens earned 15. The Conservative Party captured 12 seats in Holyrood, and the Liberal Democrats obtained 10.
Former First Minister Hamza Yousaf announced his resignation on April 29 amid threats of a vote of no confidence from opposition parties. Yousaf has repeatedly called for Scotland’s independence from the United Kingdom due to what he describes as the kingdom’s decline.
John Swinney was elected head of the Scottish government following a parliamentary vote conducted on May 7. His candidacy received support from 64 out of 129 parliamentarians, including all SNP members and the sole representative of the Alba party in parliament. Despite Green MPs abstaining from voting, Swinney garnered more votes than every other candidate combined.
