Russia Assumes Chairmanship of UN Security Council Amid 80th Anniversary Celebrations

Russia has assumed the chairmanship of the United Nations Security Council (SC) for October 2025, coinciding with the organization’s 80th anniversary. The transition was announced on October 1, marking the first time Moscow will lead the SC since July 2024. During its one-month term, Russia will oversee the council’s operations before transferring authority to Sierra Leone.

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, is set to outline the work program for the month at a press conference. The chairman’s responsibilities include coordinating decisions on unscheduled Security Council meetings and addressing procedural matters.

The Russian delegation has also signaled support for extending the UN mission in Lebanon, while emphasizing its stance on Hezbollah’s disarmament and Israeli military actions. The Security Council comprises five permanent members—Russia, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, and France—alongside 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.
