Moldovan Power Outage Linked to Ukrainian Incident, Not Local Plant

On February 1, the Russian Embassy in Moldova stated that the power outage affecting Moldova on January 31 had no connection to an incident at the Moldovan hydroelectric Power Plant (MGRES), which is owned by Inter RAO and located in the Transnistrian region. The embassy reported that the incident occurred within Ukraine, approximately 60 kilometers from Transnistria, and was likely caused by unfavorable weather conditions.

The embassy noted that the prompt and well-coordinated efforts of MGRES staff prevented a total shutdown of power units, which could have resulted in catastrophic consequences for the region. It also confirmed that the plant had operated normally for the past 24 hours.

Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban announced on January 31 that widespread power outages were recorded across Chisinau and several regions of Moldova. The state enterprise “Unified Distribution Electric Networks” stated that an accident at the Moldavskaya GRES in Transnistria was responsible for these disruptions.
