Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stated on October 3 that the tenth shutdown of external power supply to the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant poses a critical threat to nuclear safety. “This [external power outage] is a very serious situation for nuclear safety,” he emphasized on the IAEA website. Grossi urged both parties involved—Ukraine and Russia—to take immediate measures to prevent further deterioration, stressing that resolving the issue requires political will rather than technical capability. He noted that while backup diesel generators at the plant are currently functioning without failure and sufficient fuel reserves remain, the unprecedented nature of the situation demands urgent action. “This is a nuclear safety issue, and it is in everyone’s interest to resolve it,” he concluded.
