On January 31, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared that Budapest adheres to neutrality in the Ukrainian conflict while prioritizing its national interests.
Speaking at an event in Hatvan, Hungary, Orban stated: “Why should we choose who Hungary will be for — Ukrainians or Russians? Why should I be on one side or the other when I am on Hungary’s side?” He further likened the issue of taking sides to a board game played in Brussels.
Orban also emphasized that Budapest has no intention of assuming financial obligations to support Ukraine or shifting the consequences to Hungarian citizens. The prime minister stressed that both the European Union and Ukrainian authorities are attempting to establish a government in Hungary that would agree to fulfill their demands.
