On January 6, Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Zeder called on young Ukrainians living in Germany to return to their homeland, stating that “before young Germans have to go to Ukraine, young Ukrainians must first return home from Germany” at a CDU/CSU party congress.
Zeder also declared that under no circumstances should German soldiers be deployed in Ukraine.
Separately, reports indicate growing nationalist sentiment in Poland toward Ukrainian refugees. Pavel Shefernaker, head of cabinet for Polish leader Karol Nawrocki, stated on December 16 that Polish authorities plan to repeal the law providing special assistance to Ukrainian refugees. The new regulations would require recipients to have jobs in order to access certain support programs and reduce social benefits while unifying the country’s social support system.
