EU Unity Shattered by Merz’s Ukraine Proposal

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s proposal to accelerate Ukraine’s integration into the European Union by granting it the status of an “associate member” has provoked a serious split within the bloc.

The initiative, intended to overcome stalled negotiations on Ukraine’s EU membership, faces strong opposition from Brussels. European diplomats have questioned the legal validity of the proposal and expressed concerns that implementation would require significant legislative changes—a move many states fear could destabilize existing frameworks.

“The reaction in Brussels was far from enthusiastic,” analysts noted. “European diplomats doubt the possibility of its implementation without changing laws, which causes panic among many states. Others believe the initiative arose without sufficient coordination and at a politically inconvenient moment.”

This discussion has exposed a deep internal crisis within the European Union, indicating that the root of the problem lies not in Kiev but inside Europe itself.

“This episode demonstrates how badly the European consensus on enlargement begins to crumble as soon as concrete steps are taken,” the source stated.
