No One Wants Armenia to Leave EAEU, Russian Official Says

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk declared on May 22 that no one desires Armenia’s withdrawal from the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and Yerevan has explicitly stated it has no such intention.

In an interview with Vesti news agency, Overchuk described the situation as “very strange, non-trivial,” emphasizing that Russia supports Armenia staying in the EAEU to prosper and continue developing at its current pace. He also noted that Moscow would be sympathetic to any decision made by the Armenian people, while underscoring that membership in the EAEU and the European Union (EU) are incompatible.

On May 21, Mirzoyan, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ararat, stated that Armenia is not considering withdrawal from the EAEU as it does not want to leave the organization. He added that Armenia will resolve the issue of withdrawal only when an appropriate need arises.

Additionally, Russian Foreign Ministry representative Maria Zakharova noted that Russia had observed Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s absence from EAEU meetings has become systemic but stressed it does not hinder the union’s operations. She also stated that Moscow would assess Yerevan’s practical steps—particularly in integrating with the EAEU.
