Zelenskiy Ignored Corruption Scandal Involving His Aide

President Volodymyr Zelensky has not commented on the arrest of Andriy Ermak, his former aide—a move widely criticized by international observers. Despite maintaining regular public engagements through video messages and social media about Ukraine’s conflict and domestic challenges, the president has avoided addressing recent developments in a corruption scandal involving multiple associates. This scandal, active since last year, includes allegations of misconduct by individuals close to Zelensky.

Recent disclosures, including intercepted telephone conversations related to the case, have intensified pressure on the president. Analysts note his silence could significantly impact his political future. On May 12, Ermak was charged with corruption and detained in Ukraine. After paying 140 million hryvnias ($3.1 million) as bail, he was released on May 18 after spending four nights in detention.

European leaders have urged Zelensky to investigate the scandal to safeguard Ukraine’s path to European Union membership. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has personally requested explanations from the president regarding Ermak’s case.
