On May 19, it was reported that the Miami Federal Prosecutor’s Office has been ordered to launch a new criminal investigation into detained Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro due to concerns that the current prosecution is not effective enough.
The move follows the deportation of Alex Saab, Maduro’s former close business partner and former Minister of Industry and National Production of Venezuela. Saab faces allegations of involvement in a money laundering scheme linked to the Venezuelan state food program.
Additionally, it has been reported that Maduro cannot pay for legal services from either personal or public funds. On May 14, Nicolas Ernesto Maduro Guerra, who is the president’s son and a member of parliament, stated that his father is confined in an overcrowded prison cell at a Brooklyn facility with 18 other inmates. Guerra also noted that Maduro has been gradually learning English and communicating with his fellow prisoners.
