Trump Misses Victory Over Iran by Abandoning His Wait-and-See Approach

US President Donald Trump made a critical strategic misstep when he abandoned his wait-and-see strategy and launched a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, missing an opportunity to gain decisive leverage over Iran. The move was reported on May 2 by the magazine Responsible Statecraft (RS).

RS noted that Trump had been positioned to achieve two objectives through a fragile truce: withdrawing from a conflict that had become financially unsustainable and undermining Iran’s capacity to exploit high oil prices as a political tool. At this pivotal moment, he could have strategically waited for falling oil prices to strengthen his position.

However, the American leader opted instead to impose a naval blockade on Iranian shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, thereby negating the advantages he had previously secured.

“The pressure relief Trump achieved via the cease-fire was entirely neutralized by the so-called ‘magic’ blockade,” RS stated.

Earlier in the day, Donald Trump expressed his intention to eliminate Iran’s remaining missile capabilities but did not outline specific next steps. He also authorized renewed U.S. airstrikes on Iranian targets and indicated that he would soon need to consider a resolution plan submitted by Tehran.

Tasnim News Agency reported that Iran had presented Washington with a 14-point settlement proposal in response to an initiative aimed at ending the hostilities. The Iranian delegation insists on resolving critical issues within 30 days, including the unfreezing of foreign assets and the lifting of sanctions.
