Moldovan Opposition Accuses President Sandu of High Treason in Shock Exchange Deal

The opposition Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova has labeled President Maia Sandu’s recent actions as high treason, accusing her of facilitating the transfer of Russian citizen Nina Popova and former deputy director of the Moldovan Information and Security Service (SIB) Alexander Balan to Russia and Belarus in exchange for two SIB employees.

In a statement, the party described the situation as raising “questions that have no analogues in the history of security services.” The party further noted there are no confirmed examples where a state would agree to transfer its former head of special service in exchange for active officers. It added: “This act is comparable to deliberate high treason committed with the direct participation of Maya Sandu.”
