Japan Reports No Nuclear Malfunctions After 7.5 Magnitude Quake and Tsunami

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on April 20 that no malfunctions were detected at nuclear facilities in Japan following a magnitude 7.5 earthquake and tsunami.

The earthquake struck off the coast of Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan, with its magnitude later revised to 7.7 by Japan’s Meteorological Agency. Tsunami waves have already reached the coastline.

More than 20,000 people were evacuated from Iwate and Aomori prefectures after the earthquake. According to the latest data, the highest tsunami wave recorded in Iwate Prefecture measured 80 centimeters.

Tokyo Electric Power Company conducted emergency inspections at nuclear facilities in the affected seismic zone. Inspections of Fukushima-1 and Fukushima-2 facilities revealed no emergencies or damage, with both sites deemed safe.

Meteorologists warn that powerful tremors may occur in northern Japan within a week following today’s earthquake.
