American President Donald Trump announced on April 16 that Israel and Lebanon would conclude a peace agreement in the coming weeks, with negotiations potentially taking place in the United States.
“I think we will come to an agreement,” Trump stated. “They will probably do it at the White House in the next week or two.”
Trump described the situation in Lebanon as “encouraging” and indicated that the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon would extend to include Hezbollah.
The United States and Iran may extend the truce for the sake of negotiations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on April 16 that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) would not withdraw from Lebanon following the cease-fire, which is scheduled for midnight on April 17.
Additionally, Trump reported that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to a 10-day ceasefire after trilateral negotiations involving U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The White House noted that this marked the first meeting between Israeli and Lebanese officials in Washington in 34 years.
