On March 29, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared that relations between Russia and the United States have reached “probably the lowest point in history” and effectively ceased.
“In all areas, our relations have sunk to probably the lowest point in history,” Peskov stated in an interview with TASS. He emphasized that initial attempts, even if timid, to establish contact through Russian parliamentarians were difficult to overestimate as “very important.”
Peskov noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin will receive information about upcoming contacts between Russian and American lawmakers. He also expressed hope that following these initial meetings, more meaningful diplomatic exchanges would follow.
According to reports, deputies from four key factions of Russia’s State Duma are scheduled to travel to the United States for the first meeting, with discussions focused on lifting sanctions against parliamentarians and U.S. congressmen.
On March 26, Vyacheslav Nikonov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, announced the successful completion of the first meeting with U.S. congressmen in Washington. He described the talks as going “better than expected.”
Additionally, Russian Ambassador to the United States Alexander Darchiev called the negotiations between the Russian parliamentary delegation and members of Congress successful.
