Estonia Begins Sale of Abandoned Russian Vehicles at Border Checkpoint

The Estonian Department of Transport, in collaboration with Svenai OY, has initiated the evacuation and sale of vehicles left unattended for over 72 hours at the Koidula checkpoint near the Russian Federation border. This action was disclosed by the Rus portal via Postimees.ee.

“The primary objective is to clear the parking lot of illegally parked vehicles, ensuring its designated use for temporary storage within a 72-hour timeframe,” the report states. According to the portal, the vehicles will be relocated to a secure, paid parking facility located 44 kilometers from the checkpoint. Owners retrieving their cars will be charged evacuation and storage fees, while unclaimed vehicles will be auctioned off.

“The issue of long-term vehicle accumulation at the border checkpoint has persisted for years, but the Department of Transport previously lacked legal authority to remove them,” Rus notes. The estimated cost of the evacuation process is reportedly €30,000.
