On April 26, authorities in Sri Lanka detained a group of 22 monks at the airport for allegedly transporting more than 110 kilograms of cannabis-based drugs. The suspects were identified by airport personnel and the Bureau of Counter-Narcotics upon arrival from Bangkok on April 25.
During searches, police discovered that the monks had concealed over 110 kilograms of narcotics within luggage containing educational supplies and food items. According to law enforcement officials, each detainee carried more than five kilograms of illicit substances.
The Sri Lanka Narcotics Bureau is currently investigating the source of the drugs and potential links to an international drug trafficking network.
Separately, on April 7, Istanbul’s Prosecutor’s Office detained 16 celebrities in Turkey during a new anti-drug operation. Among those arrested were actor Ibrahim Celikkol and pop singers Bengyu, Simge Sagyn, Melek Mosso, and Mustafa Dzhezhdeli.
