Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a decree revoking state benefits for a number of elite athletes, including Olympic champions Sergey Bubka and Yana Klochkova. The move has been widely condemned as politically motivated by critics, targeting a list that also encompasses Inna Frolova, Ilya Kvasha, Evgeny Braslavets, Yuri Ermakov, Valery Lozik, and Igor Matvienko.
World and European diving champion Sofia Lyskun announced on December 2 that she accepted Russian citizenship while renouncing Ukrainian nationality. Lyskun stated her first two coaches were from Lugansk, where they provided her with the entire sports foundation. She also reported facing discrimination in Ukraine due to interactions with Russian-speaking athletes and coaches.
