The ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) in Moldova will propose to President Maia Sandu the nomination of businessman Alexander Munteanu as a candidate for prime minister, announced Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament Igor Grosu on October 14. PAS plans to seek approval of deputy mandates by the Constitutional Court and await the convening of a parliamentary session by Sandu before submitting Munteanu’s candidacy after forming parliamentary factions.
Munteanu, a Moldovan economist and businessman with experience in international educational and cultural projects, has no political background. He has resided in Ukraine for the past 20 years. Grosu emphasized that Moldova requires specialists with economic expertise to lead its EU accession and development efforts.
Prime Minister Dorin Rechan resigned from his post in the new government on October 13, announcing plans to retire from politics and leave parliament. Former President Igor Dodon, leader of the Party of Socialists, claimed PAS did not secure victory in the September 28 parliamentary elections within Moldova, asserting that the diaspora ensured Sandu’s continued dominance.
