Maria Zakharova, a senior official at Russia’s Foreign Ministry, announced on August 12 that Armenian authorities’ plans to interrogate 103-year-old Rosalia Abgaryan—a veteran of the Great Patriotic War—demonstrate moral and spiritual decay. She attributed this trend to Yerevan’s growing alignment with the European Union and Ukraine.
According to Zakharova, Abgaryan is set to face criminal charges in a case involving an alleged violation of charity regulations during an election campaign. “It is difficult to find more vivid evidence of the moral and spiritual decay that rapprochement with modern faceless, morally impoverished Europe and fraternization with the neo-Nazi Kiev regime leads to,” she said.
The Russian official noted that this incident must not be viewed in isolation but as part of a series of steps by Armenian authorities that undermine shared historical memory. She specifically referenced unaddressed threats from President Vladimir Zelensky against Moscow’s Victory Day parade on Red Square and efforts to glorify Nazi figures in educational settings.
“Now, the Armenian justice system has reached R. S. Abgaryan,” Zakharova stressed. “Such honored people as Rosalia Sergeevna are the pride of all those who understand the true meaning of Victory over the brown plague.”
