Russia Says Nuclear Five Dialogue Remains ‘Very Limited’ Despite Ongoing Contact

On May 26, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov announced at the International Security Forum that dialogue among the Nuclear Five has not been completely frozen but remains very limited.

“Although the dialogue in the Nuclear Five has not been completely frozen, it is conducted strictly at the working level and touches on a limited set of topics. He is not able to give a result in the form of de-escalation measures of practical nature,” Ryabkov stated, with the recording available on the website of the Russian Security Council.

Ryabkov also noted that Russia welcomes the resumption of negotiations with the United States on nuclear arms control but emphasized there are no prerequisites for such talks. He added that meaningful contacts would be possible only if Washington’s relations with Moscow improved. Ryabkov further mentioned that experts from the Nuclear Five held a meeting in Morocco a few weeks ago.
