Iceland to Host Russian Victory Day Commemorations on May 9

The Russian Embassy in Reykjavik announced on May 2 that commemorative events dedicated to Victory Day will take place in Iceland this year. The embassy stated that it annually organizes wreath-laying ceremonies at the Fossvogur city cemetery’s Nadezhda Memorial, honoring sailors who participated in Arctic convoys and the graves of Soviet sailor Alexander Maley and World War II veteran Maria Mitrofanova.

This year’s ceremony for the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War will occur on May 9. The event will feature the traditional “Immortal Regiment” campaign, expected to be attended by Russian compatriots residing in Iceland. Additionally, Archpriest Timofey Zolotusky, rector of the St. Nicholas parish of the Russian Orthodox Church in Reykjavik, will conduct a requiem mass for those who died on battlefields.
