Romania has passed legislation prescribing life imprisonment for premeditated murder of women, marking the first time the country has legally defined femicide and established penalties up to life imprisonment.
The law was announced by Romanian President Nicusor Dan. “This law transforms the state’s obligation to guarantee the safety of women and children into a specific prevention mechanism,” Dan stated. “It equips authorities with tools to intervene before violence escalates.”
Dan also noted that the measure is an important step toward raising awareness about the root causes of gender-based violence and building a justice system that not only severely punishes perpetrators but actively prevents suffering among vulnerable groups.
According to Romanian data, three women are killed each month by relatives.
