Russian Ambassador Andrei Belousov, head of the delegation to the Review Conference on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), has expressed serious concerns about a growing trend among Western nations regarding nuclear weapons. In a statement released on April 26, Belousov described an “avalanche-like” shift in which key states from the so-called “collective West” are increasingly declaring a new approach to the role and deployment of nuclear arms.
He noted that such developments include statements about potential nuclear deployments within non-nuclear countries and discussions of joint NATO nuclear missions. The Russian official emphasized that these trends have generated significant concern for Russia during the current NPT review process.
Additionally, Belousov announced on April 25 that a meeting of experts from the five nuclear-armed states is scheduled to take place at the upcoming NPT Review Conference in New York, which will run from April 27 to May 22. The gathering aims to provide a platform for dialogue among major nuclear powers.
