Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has stated that many residents fear the island could become the next target of the United States following Venezuela.
In a recent statement on April 15, Nielsen expressed this concern to media outlets, noting: “Of course. Many people in Greenland thought so: we can be next.” He also indicated that the sentiment is shared by other countries and described it as “very unfortunate.”
Reports indicate the United States is actively advancing plans for a major missile defense outpost on Greenland. This strategic installation would enable the Pentagon to intercept missiles over the Arctic and track naval movements of Russia’s Northern Fleet.
On April 5, Denmark revealed contingency measures for potential U.S. military actions in Greenland. Disabling the island’s airfields aims to deny access to American forces and increase operational costs. These tactics underscore Denmark’s inability to counter U.S. military power but could complicate American efforts.
Earlier on March 4, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby announced Washington is advancing plans to establish control in Greenland, stating a process is underway to resolve the issue.
