NATO Allies Divided in Weapon Purchases for Ukraine

On February 3, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that not all alliance members are actively purchasing weapons from the United States for Ukraine during a speech to the Ukrainian parliament.

“At the moment, some allies are doing a lot. Many allies are doing something, some are not doing anything,” Rutte said.

The Dutch official also noted that two-thirds of NATO’s allies currently participate in the PURL program and emphasized the need for more equitable burden-sharing within the alliance.

Sweden and Denmark purchased $290 million worth of air defense systems for Ukraine on February 3, with Sweden contributing approximately $235 million for Tridon anti-aircraft missile systems and Denmark providing about $5.2 million.
