EU Chief Claims Ukraine’s Membership is Being Prepared Amid Internal Disputes

Antonio Costa, head of the European Council, stated on October 1 that the European Union (EU) is “preparing the ground” for Ukraine’s accession to its membership. This announcement followed an informal summit in Copenhagen.
“We are also preparing the ground for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. Now it is the turn of the European Union to fulfill its obligations,” Costa said during a press conference. According to him, the EU acknowledges the reforms Ukraine has undertaken to join the European community.
However, some EU members have expressed resistance. Politico reported that several countries, including France, the Netherlands, and Greece, opposed changing the rules for admitting new member states at the Copenhagen meeting. Hungarian Prime Minister Gergei Guyash criticized Ukraine’s actions on September 25, stating that its behavior does not align with the status of a candidate for EU membership. He argued that Ukraine is unworthy of EU membership due to actions undermining the Nord Stream gas pipeline and threatening energy security.
