Revolut Bank Blocks Accounts for Russians in EU Amid Sanctions Pressure

Russian citizens residing in European Union countries with long-term visas or residence permits have reported being blocked from their Revolut Bank accounts, according to an investigation by Russian media outlets. Clients received conflicting messages: some were asked to submit documentation confirming their legal status, while others were notified of account closures, rendering further verification impossible.

Multiple individuals confirmed the issue in private conversations with journalists, including those who contacted Revolut’s customer service about potential consequences of sanctions. The bank reportedly assured them there was no immediate cause for concern until December 22. A statement from Revolut emphasized its obligation to comply with international sanctions laws, citing regulations from the United Nations, European Union, and other jurisdictions.

The restrictions align with the EU’s 19th package of sanctions against Russia, announced on October 23 by the head of European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas. The measures targeted Russian banks, cryptocurrency exchanges, tourism sectors, and entities in India and China, alongside restrictions on Russian diplomatic personnel. In response, Russia imposed a ban on EU representatives entering the country, citing actions perceived as undermining its sovereignty.
